RZSS Environmental Award

Winners of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland Environmental Award 2007

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is delighted to announce that Parkhill Secondary School, Glasgow and Currie Community High School, Edinburgh are the joint winners of the Society’s first Environmental Award.

The RZSS Environmental Award was established to encourage schools across Scotland to engage in an environmental project or enterprise to raise awareness of the environment, sustainability and biodiversity.

Both schools received a cheque for £1,500 from the RZSS in recognition of their achievements and a certificate presented at the RZSS Global Classroom student ‘Climate Change Conference’ held at Edinburgh Zoo, 26th and 27th September.

Pupils at Parkhill Secondary School have formed an eco-committee and established a routine of recycling and energy and resource saving at school, as well as taking this message and action home. S1 pupils have also joined with the Strathclyde Country Park Ranger Service to learn about the local environment and achieve Junior Ranger certificates. An outdoor nature site has also been established at the school and pupils have grown potatoes as well as flowers and other plants.

The pupils at Parkhill, who have moderate learning difficulties, have also been thinking and acting on behalf of others and organised a fund-raising event to support Oxfam’s work in Africa and through Action Aid to sponsor a child in Uganda.

Currie Community High School pupils have been assisting in the management of Roley’s Wood in Currie. This has involved cleaning the area of litter and rubbish, restoring the woodland, tree planting, putting up nest boxes for birds and bats, creating habitat areas for invertebrates and studying the biodiversity of the woodland. The school has also formed a partnership with Chogoria High School in Kenya, and pupils there have been engaged in a similar forest management and tree planting project, which directly supports the community and its use of wood for fuel and construction materials. The two schools exchange news and experiences and enable a local action and global awareness element to the work in both schools.

Stephen Woollard, RZSS Education & Interpretation Manager said: “The RZSS Environmental Award recognises the enthusiasm, hard work and commitment of pupils and staff at both Parkhill Secondary and Currie High schools. The Award is part of our Global Classroom initiative, designed to encourage students to directly engage with environmental issues from climate change to local biodiversity and we are delighted to be able to encourage the next generation of conservationists and environmentalists”.
