Sad news from Koala Territory

22/06/2016 in Edinburgh Zoo

We are sad to announce that Yooranah, a three year old male koala born at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo in May 2013, died on the evening of Tuesday 21 June.

Keepers at the Zoo have been monitoring the situation closely following a prolonged period of illness; however, despite the best efforts of our expert veterinary team, Yooranah was unable to recover and died late on Tuesday evening. A full post mortem will now be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Darren McGarry, Head of Living Collections at Edinburgh Zoo, said: "We're extremely sad to report that Yooranah, our three year old male koala, died yesterday evening following a period of illness. We would like to reassure all the people that had taken Yooranah to their hearts over the past three years that nothing more could have been done for this much loved koala. He received the very best medical care and animal husbandry. Yooranah will be greatly missed by all."

Yooranah was the first koala joey to be born in the UK in May 2013 to mother Alinga and father Goonaroo, both of whom remain at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo.

Koala Territory will be open to the public as normal today.
