Membership and adoption terms and conditions

IMPORTANT NOTE: for both membership and adoption, we aim to process packs within 10 working days once the application has been received, however this can take longer during busier periods.


  • A valid RZSS membership card entitles the named holder to free admission to RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park during their published opening hours. Admission to both sites is subject to the standard terms and conditions of entry. Additionally RZSS membership entitles the holder to admission to participating reciprocal zoos – Belfast, Bristol, *Chester, Colchester, Dublin, Fota Wild Animal Park, Living Coast, *Marwell, Newquay, Paignton, Rotterdam & Twycross (*one visit per year).
  • Holders of a valid RZSS membership card are entitled to bring up to six guests with a 25% discount to their single ticket prices. Members also receive a 10% discount in the RZSS gift shop along with food and drink at all kiosks within the park – excluding alcoholic beverages.
  • Membership and adoption benefits and policies are subject to change throughout the year and may do so without prior notification.
  • RZSS is able to offer Direct Debit to our customers. Direct Debits will be taken on or around the 15th of each month. Customers wishing to pay for membership by Direct Debit must pay in advance a deposit, equal to the sum of single ticket admission for each person named on the membership. Issues with payment failure to fulfil your financial obligations will impact on your inclusion within the Direct Debit scheme. We reserve the right to withdraw the offer of Direct Debit at any time.
  • RZSS membership is an annual product, so if paying by Direct Debit this means you are responsible for the payment of your membership from the date of purchase for no less than 12 months. If you cancel your monthly direct debit or you decide to quit your membership mid-term and/or your monthly payment fails, you remain responsible for the outstanding balance.
  • Membership cards are strictly non-transferable under any circumstances, and may be used only by the named holder to whom the card was issued.
  • An adult must accompany children aged 15 years or younger.
  • The card cannot be used for educational school visits.
  • Children who turn three years old during the course of parent or guardian’s membership are subject to entrance fee. If you wish to add that child to your existing membership we are happy to do this pro rata, which will bring them in line with the primary membership holder, making it easier when it comes time to renew.
  • Things invariably change. Customers are responsible for ensuring that they inform us of any changes to their information.
  • Please look after your membership card as there is a £5 fee on each replacement card and car parking pass.
  • Free admission will not be granted without the production of a valid membership card. If you plan to visit and are unable to produce your card, please contact the membership team on 0131 314 0374 during office hours Monday - Friday 09:00 – 17:00, to make alternative arrangements in advance of your visit. If you do not have your card with you when you visit and have not advised the membership team 24 hours in advance of your arrival, then entry will be charged at the usual admission rate which is strictly non-refundable.
  • We reserve the right to refuse admission and/or cancel adoption or membership without refund.
  • Members are entitled to discounted car parking rates of £2.00 per vehicle (subject to change), for the vehicle they are travelling in, when they show a valid membership card. 
  • The membership year cannot be extended or transferred and refunds cannot be given if membership is cancelled mid-term.
  • A student is defined as an individual currently enrolled in a full-time or part-time course at an institution of higher education such as a university or college. Students must provide valid student identification if requesting discount.
  • We reserve the right to refuse admission and/or cancel adoption or membership without refund if anyone behaves in a threatening or abusive way to our staff, contractors, visitors or animals.

Members' car parking passes

  • Replacement car parking passes are chargeable at £5 per pass to cover the cost and administration fee.
  • Only one pass is issued per transaction; if you require multiple passes each of these may be purchased at the standard parking pass rate.
  • We know that some people may have more than one car; if you wish to use the pass across multiple vehicles you may do so. All you need to do is not stick the pass to your window. We will accept car park passes that still have their original backing on as valid so they need not be stuck to one specific vehicle.
  • The pass will only remain valid as long as you have an active RZSS membership.
  • The pass gives the holder the right to free parking while visiting RZSS Edinburgh Zoo.
  • This pass does not guarantee you a space; these are allocated on a first come first served basis.
  • The pass must be shown along with a valid membership card every time you visit, otherwise you will be charged £2, which is non-refundable.

Animal adoption

  • Our animal collection is always evolving, therefore if your adopted species is withdrawn from our collection you will be given the opportunity to choose another species to support for the remainder of your adoption year. However, refunds are not given.
  • Adoption applies to a species at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo or RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and not an individual animal.
  • More than one person can be named on the adopter certificate; however adopters will only receive one adoption pack and one invitation to the adopter event.
  • Refunds cannot be given if adoption is cancelled mid-term.
  • Names of adopters are listed at the animal enclosures for Silver, Gold and Platinum packages only (it will take a minimum of 10 working days for adopter names to appear on enclosures). Bronze adopters do not receive this benefit.
  • We run special events for our adopters and members on selected days throughout the year. Information on these events can be found on our website. We are unable to reschedule these events due to an individual’s circumstances and dates are strictly non-transferable.
  • Due to the nature of our collection we cannot guarantee that the animal that you have adopted will be on show at the time of your visit.
  • We reserve the right to refuse admission and/or cancel adoption or membership without refund if anyone behaves in a threatening or abusive way to our staff, contractors, visitors or animals.
