Living Links

Living Links to Human Evolution

Living Links is a field station and research centre, based in Edinburgh Zoo, for the study of primates. The centre has been developed in a unique partnership with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which owns Edinburgh Zoo, and the University of St Andrews.

Living Links houses two species of monkey - capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys. In the wild, these monkeys originate from the forests of South America. Within Living Links each species has their own inner enclosure, but as in the wild they are known to form mixed species groups, in Living Links they are given the option to form mixed groups in their large leafy outside enclosures.

Linking Visitors' Experience to Science

Living Links offers visitors extraordinary and unparalleled opportunities for engagement with science. In this unique collaboration visitors to Edinburgh Zoo will be able to engage with the University scientists' primate research.

Scottish Primate Research Group

Living Links supports studies by an internationally recognised consortium of scientists called the Scottish Primate Research Group. This consists of scientists from the Universities of St Andrews, Stirling, Edinburgh and Abertay.

The Scottish Primate Research Group has built a reputation as the most prominent primate research group in the UK and one of the leading consortia of this kind in the world. The creation of Living Links recognises the special status of primatology in Scotland.

Global Primate Conservation & Research

Members of the Scottish Primate Research Group study primate behaviour at many sites in the wilds of Africa, South America and Asia, as well as animals within zoos.

Living Links is affiliated with Budongo Trail where SPRG scientists pursue related studies of chimpanzees. Living Links is also affiliated with the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Centre, Emory University, Atlanta.
