Illegal Wildlife Trade
Strategic aim: Apply our expertise to support international efforts to combat the illegal wildlife trade.
In recent years, the issue of poaching and the illegal trade in wildlife has risen to the fore as a major conservation issue. Tackling it, requires simultaneous efforts to reduce consumer demand, develop alternative livelihoods in range states and support law enforcement. The RZSS WildGenes lab has supported a wide range of initiatives to help combat the illegal wildlife trade including the development of the first “SNP” genetic test for African elephant and Asian elephant. We are currently working with DEFRA, FFI and the Royal University of Phnom Penh to combat the illegal trade in ivory in Cambodia.
