Watervole health screening
This project involves the undertaking of pre-release health screening for captive water voles used in release projects in Britain. Prior to RZSS’s involvement, pre-release health screening had largely been ignored or undocumented.
Releases of captive bred water voles to restore populations is a recognised practice, particularly in England, where more than 3,000 animals have been released as part of over 20 translocation, reintroduction or supplementation projects. RZSS is leading on the development of pragmatic health screening protocols following IUCN translocation guidelines, and is building our scientific understanding of screening procedures and veterinary knowledge on the species.
