At RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and Edinburgh Zoo, we help people to connect with conservation in the wild through the species in our care. Many of our animals are part of European Endangered Species Programmes (EEP). We are also leading on the off-show conservation breeding of a number of species that are on the brink of extinction, including the partula snail, Scottish wildcat and pine hoverfly. The RZSS WildGenes lab is working on improving the genetic management of many of captive populations such as scimitar-horned oryx, Pallas’s cat and sand cat. The expertise that our scientists and veterinarians gain working on-site is taken out into the wild to support the conservation of threatened species in-situ.
