Biodiversity Virtual Tour

Develop your class’s understanding of genetic, species and ecosystem biodiversity (Higher: 3.7) by focusing on our incredible cat species during a virtual tour. While exploring definitions and real-world examples, your class will embed their understanding and create their own concept cartoons. They will also learn about threats to biodiversity (Higher: 3.8) and the distribution of organisms (SCN 3-01a) and ecosystems (Nat 5: 3.1).

Supporting resources to use in your classroom are available for free to enhance your virtual tour, including games, challenges and scientific guidance for assessing your local biodiversity.

Session Outcomes

To define biodiversity and its three measurements: genetic, species and ecosystem diversity.

To discuss different methods that can be used to monitor wild populations and the pros and cons of each.

To appreciate that biodiversity globally is decreasing due to a number of human-caused threats.

To understand that conservation efforts are required to limit the already substantial losses of biodiversity within the current mass extinction.
