RZSS CONSERVATION PROJECTS

Gough Island

Gough Island

RZSS’s initial involvement in this project will be to provide health assessments of the wild living Gough moorhen (Gallinula comeri) and Gough bunting (Rowettia goughensis) as part of preparatory work for a planned eradication of introduced house mice on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

This eradication programme requires that we keep individuals of these endemic, globally threatened species in captivity for several months to minimise their exposure to rodenticide cereal pellets. A full health screening is required to inform us of potential health problems in this species while in captivity.

The Gough Island project is being delivered in partnership with the RSPB.
