Illegal Wildlife Trade
Strategic aim: Launch a programme of work aimed at applying our technical zoological expertise to support international efforts to combat the illegal wildlife trade.
In recent years the issue of poaching and the illegal trade in wildlife has risen to the fore as a major conservation issue. Tackling it requires simultaneous efforts to reduce consumer demand, develop alternative livelihoods in range states and support law enforcement. At RZSS we have internationally recognised expertise in the field of wildlife forensics; working in partnership with TRACE Wildlife Forensics Network, we apply these techniques to support the enforcement of CITES regulations and help investigate the trade in species such as rhinoceroses, elephants, tigers and pangolins.
