The RZSS Giant Armadillo Conservation Project in the Brazilian Pantanal uses camera traps to help better understand the ecology and biology of the species, as well as understand the role they play in the wider ecosystem.
Over the last few years the project has photographed over 24 different species using giant armadillo burrows for a variety of purposes including, a thermal refuge, shelter against predators, a feeding ground or resting spot. This has helped the researchers publish a scientific paper describing the role of giant armadillos as ecosystem engineers.
RZSS Regional Coordinator, Arnaud Desbiez has shared some of the camera trap images with us including ocelots, red legged seriema, peccaries, coati and southern tamandua:

Our charity has worked with Dr Arnaud Desbiez and his team at the Wildlife Conservation Institute (ICAS) in Brazil for over a decade to safeguard endangered giant armadillos, giant anteaters and their threatened habitat. This team has discovered nearly everything that is currently known about giant armadillos and has made incredible strides in making habitats and roads safer for giant anteaters.
