Highland Wildlife Park saddened by death of snow leopard cub

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has shared that snow leopard cub Indra was put to sleep after being diagnosed with an incurable bone condition.

Indra was placed under close observation last week when keepers noticed that he had developed a limp. He underwent a series of medical examinations at Highland Wildlife Park before RZSS vets carried out further tests and specialist assessments.

Sadly the prognosis was confirmed. The bone condition would have significantly impacted Indra’s quality of life and the difficult decision was made to put him to sleep.

Indra was born alongside his twin sister Tama at Highland Wildlife Park in June to first-time mother Pari and father Koshi. The family had been doing well until keepers noticed that Indra had developed some mobility issues.

Head of veterinary services Dr Stephanie Mota said: “Indra began to exhibit behaviours that suggested something was wrong and after initial tests we became increasingly concerned. Further tests confirmed the worst and we made the difficult decision to put him to sleep.

“This is incredibly hard news to share. Indra was such a joy to watch growing and playing with his sister. He will be greatly missed.”
