RZSS Veterinary Services

RZSS Veterinary Services

The RZSS veterinary services are split between Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park and comprise a team of five veterinary surgeons and two veterinary nurses working under the RZSS Living Collections Department. The team also contribute significantly to numerous projects led by RZSS Conservation.

For further information on the work of our veterinary department outside the living collection, please see Conservation & Research Medicine.

Animal Health

The living collections at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park make up a large and diverse collection of species and as such, present many challenges for our veterinary team. Whether trimming the nails of an Indian rhinoceros or performing an ultrasound examination on a giant African land snail, the health and welfare of the animals housed at the parks is central to our veterinary team’s work.

RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has a dedicated on-site veterinary hospital, equipped with full operating facilities and diagnostic imaging capabilities including laparoscopy, rigid and flexible endoscopy, digital radiography, and ultrasound. In addition, our in-house veterinary laboratory allows immediate analysis of samples in order to provide the best possible care for our patients.
