The RZSS veterinary services are provided by a team of three veterinary surgeons and one veterinary nurse working under the RZSS Living Collections Department. While the team is based at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, they also oversee the clinical veterinary needs of the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and contribute significantly to numerous projects led by RZSS Conservation.
For further information on the work of our veterinary department outside the living collection, please see Conservation & Research Medicine.
A full list of RZSS Veterinary Services publications will be listed shortly.
The living collections at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park make up a large and diverse collection of species and as such, present many challenges for our veterinary team. Whether trimming the nails of an Indian rhinoceros or performing an ultrasound examination on a giant African land snail, the health and welfare of the animals housed at the parks is central to our veterinary team’s work.
RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has a dedicated on-site veterinary hospital, equipped with full operating facilities and diagnostic imaging capabilities including laparoscopy, rigid and flexible endoscopy, digital radiography, and ultrasound. In addition, our in-house veterinary laboratory allows immediate analysis of samples in order to provide the best possible care for our patients.
For further information on veterinary training and education, please see Veterinary Training & Education.
In addition to the veterinary services team, the RZSS also employs a dedicated zoo animal nutritionist. For more information on zoo animal nutrition, please see Animal Nutrition.
